Spinal cord surgery can be a life-changing experience. While surgery may address the underlying condition, many patients continue to face challenges with mobility, balance, strength and confidence during recovery. Recovery often requires patience, determination, and a structured rehabilitation programme guided by physiotherapy.

One of our patients came to our rehabilitation centre following spinal cord surgery. At the start of her rehabilitation journey, she experienced significant muscle weakness, poor balance and coordination, and difficulty standing. Walking required assistance, and she lacked confidence in her movements due to fear of falling

During sit to stand movements, she demonstrated knee valgus (knee collapse inward), indicating poor lower limb control and making transfers unstable and unsafe without assistance.

Simple daily activities became challenging. Even getting to the toilet safely required assistance. Tasks such as walking around the house, climbing stairs, and carrying out household activities were difficult, affecting not only her physical abilities but also her independence and confidence.

Recognising her individual needs, a personalised physiotherapy rehabilitation programme was developed to help her regain strength, balance, mobility, and functional independence. Rehabilitation focused on strengthening exercises, balance and coordination training, gait re-education, stair training, and functional activities designed to support everyday living.

Recovery did not happen overnight. Progress came through consistent effort, regular physiotherapy sessions, and her determination. Step by step, improvements began to emerge. Over time, her movement quality, strength, and confidence gradually improved, allowing her to progress to more independent functional activities.

One of the most meaningful aspects of her recovery was regaining independence in daily life. Activities that were once difficult gradually became more manageable, allowing her to participate more actively in her normal routine.

Today, she is able to:

Walk independently without a walking stick

Climb up and down stairs safely

Perform household chores independently

Walk at the park on her own

Carry out daily activities with greater confidence and independence

Every recovery journey is unique, and outcomes vary from person to person. However, this case highlights how structured physiotherapy rehabilitation, perseverance, and ongoing support can help individuals work towards regaining function, confidence, and independence after spinal cord surgery.

Recovery is a journey, and every step forward matters.

If you or a loved one is recovering from spinal surgery, stroke, fractures, or other conditions affecting mobility and independence, physiotherapy rehabilitation at centre or home-based may help support your rehabilitation journey.
